What are mood disorders?

Mood disorders are those ailments that are caused by the emotional condition of the people. All of us are subject to some type of emotional impact, on a daily basis. Some of these impacts are positive in nature and can elevate the people to a state of happiness and euphoria, while others are negative in nature and can leave the people who are experiencing them, depressed and surly for the entire day. Whatever may be the cause or type of emotional impact; they have a direct bearing on the general state of mind and can make or break the “mood” of the individuals. Some of these emotional impacts are longer lasting in nature; they are severe enough to last for a long time and can cause prolonged influence on the moods of the individuals. If these impacts are negative in nature, people suffering from them can lapse into mood disorders, which will require proper diagnosis, treatment and rectification. Psychiatrists and expert behavioral therapists can identify the mood disorders in people and can also help in overcoming and controlling them. All psychological disorders can have symptoms that are related to mood swings but if the mood swings and behavioral changes are caused by emotional impact alone, these ailments can be classified as mood disorders.

Mood disorders can affect the mental state of health in many adverse ways. They can be broadly classified into two different categories – depressive disorders and bipolar disorders. Depressive disorders are those types of mood disorders that cause the patients to be in an extended state of depression. It is common for people to experience the “blues” from time to time. Usually they can come out of it in a few hours or in a few days. If people suffer from depressive tendencies and thoughts for a longer duration, they are most likely suffering from some type of depressive mood disorders. Bipolar disorders are those where patients display tendencies of depression, along with manic behavior. Sometimes, the depressive tendencies are not so visible in bipolar patients but bouts of mania or hyper mania are abundantly visible in them. The causes for mood disorders are varied in nature, as are the treatment procedures and therapies. He causes can be as obvious as some mental trauma induced by bereavement or they can be very specialized and complicated. Only professionally trained experts can determine the type of mood disorders in people. Early detection and treatment can help in effective control of these psychological disorders.
